Huhtasuo School and Kindergarten Centre: Life-cycle model for better indoor air quality for the entire life-cycle

Indoor air
better indoor air quality for 740 students

Modern
and easily convertible spaces

No maintenance debt
The city will not incur any maintenance debt and the center will remain of high quality throughout its life-cycle

The life-cycle project was launched due to poor indoor air quality and mould problems. The life-cycle solution supports the well-being of virtually every user in school and kindergarten. The aim was to make the school flexible and transformable, where small changes can be made to create solutions suitable for different situations.

Objectives

  • In the Huhtasuo school and kindergarten project in Jyväskylä, our primary goal is to keep the property in good condition now and in the future.
  • In order for children and young people to follow their path of growth and learning in good conditions, a life-cycle model was chosen for implementation and maintenance.
  • User-friendly technology.

Solutions

  • 20-year service contract expiring June 30, 2033.
  • By taking care of the premises conditions and buildings proactively and regularly, we ensure that the city does not incur maintenance debt, and that the centre remains of high quality throughout its life cycle.
  • We ensure the energy efficiency of the property and that energy consumption remains at an optimal level.
  • The Huhtasuo school and kindergarten centre has been built to be accessible.
  • In the evenings, the modern and easily adaptable spaces open their doors to the residents of the area for hobbies and recreation.
  • We manage and control the property through real-time integrated systems and high-speed fiber network connections. Pupils and school administration also use these connections in their daily work.
  • Lighting and air conditioning are automatically controlled according to the use of the property. This allows for efficient modification of the spaces.
  • The buildings are also equipped with cooling, which improves work efficiency and enables efficient year-round use of the buildings.

The new school and kindergarten centre in Huhtasuo, located in Jyväskylä, has under its roof the entire life-cycle of growing up and learning from kindergarten age to young people completing primary school. The needs of the users have given direction to the design of the building, the functionality of the facilities, and the versatility of the center.

In a nutshell

  • Huhtasuo United School, about 740 students
  • Special school, about 80 students
  • Huhtasuo kindergarten, about 160 children, 7 + 2 groups
  • Employees 170-180
  • Total area: about 16,000 m2
  • Financing: City of Jyväskylä

Another key issue was smart technology with the longest possible life-cycle. With the increasing vandalism of schools, there was also a desire to raise the level of security and seek various control and security solutions.
